Adelaida's second chance Easter egg hunt, and a very proud moment

Last night we attended another Easter egg party, this time for my moms group. There were twenty-seven kids there, ranging in age from two months to eleven years old. Rather than send all the kids out to hunt eggs at once, the younger kids (under three) had a five-minute head start before the older kids started collecting eggs. When I told Adelaida that we were going to another Easter egg hunt, she told me that she was going to find an Easter egg and put it in her bag all by herself. I knew that finding one by herself would really boost her confidence, and I wanted her to succeed. So even though Adelaida is already three, I let her go with the younger kids -- she is so calm and slow that I wasn't worried about her racing through the yard and collecting all the eggs before the older kids got to them!

Two wonderful friends in the group offered to hold Estella and Cordelia, so I was free to walk around with Adelaida and take some pictures.

Adelaida walked out to the yard, very carefully holding her Easter egg bag open. She was so intent on holding her bag open that she almost tripped over an Easter egg! I tried to gently encourage her to look down at the ground to find some eggs, but she walked right over that first egg.

Then, she spotted an egg on the ground in front of her, ran to it, and picked it up. Yay! She found an Easter egg, all by herself! She announced that it was pink, "just like the pink egg Alessandra gave me," and put it in her bag.

She continued walking, checked in with her friend Olivia, and they briefly compared egg baskets.

Another egg, and another ...

... and her Easter egg bag was starting to get full!
DSC_3755

She found a few more eggs before the bigger kids came out. We counted her eggs and found eight Easter eggs that Adelaida had found all by herself!

After the big kids came out the game changed from "find an egg on the ground" to "walk around and watch the other kids." The Easter egg hunting continued for a while longer, and Adelaida looked on the ground, behind some rocks, under the jungle gym, and next to the fence, eager to find more eggs.

When only a few well-hidden eggs remained, another family drove up to the party. The egg hunt was coming to an end, but six-year-old Sophia ran into the yard and announced that she was going to hunt Easter eggs. Adelaida walked up to her, pulled an egg out of her bag, and handed it to Sophia.

I looked at my daughter and saw a kind, thoughtful, considerate child. I was so proud of Adelaida!

An Easter egg "hunt" for the babies

After Adelaida's Easter egg hunt at school was finished, I walked over to the infant classroom to help out with the babies' Easter egg hunt. This was a very different kind of Easter egg hunt -- unlike the preschoolers, the babies were completely uninterested!

The four babies who were awake and old enough to be at all interested in the Easter egg hunt were sitting on the floor. Ms. Adrienne and Ms. Erika put little baskets full of Easter grass and eggs in front of them and tried to get the girls to look in the baskets. Here, Ms. Adrienne is pointing to the basket, saying, "Cordelia, look right here, look in the basket!" Cordelia watches Kaylee across the floor.

Finally, Addison (who is one month older than Estella and Cordelia) discovers something in her basket.

... it is Easter grass! Estella decides to eat the Easter grass.

Estella eats Easter grass while Cordelia gnaws on an egg. The babies' Easter egg hunt lasted only a few minutes, and now the babies are telling us it is time for lunch!

But before I go, the teachers bring out the bunny ears and insist on putting them on the babies for photos. Cordelia gets the bunny ears first -- what a cutie!

And now Estella gets the bunny ears! (Bunnies are supposed to eat grass, right?)

It was a fun Easter egg hunt, but eventually I had to go back to work. The babies enjoyed their Easter egg hunt -- about as much as they enjoy sitting on the floor and playing with any other toys! (They are so easy to please!)

An Easter egg hunt, and a glimpse at Adelaida's school life

Today was the annual Springstone Easter egg hunt, and I volunteered to help out, both for Adelaida's classroom and the babies' classroom. Adelaida's class did their hunt first, and being there afforded me a rare glimpse into Adelaida's life at school.

I generally see only the drop-off and pick-up times at school, which I'm sure are not representative of Adelaida's whole day. When I drop her off in the mornings, she occasionally wants her teacher to hold her but more often stands in the room, quiet, watching the other kids but not participating. By the time I pick her up, she is happy, talkative, playing with other kids, and very excited to see me. Today, I saw her in the middle of the day and realized that preschool classrooms have group dynamics very much like classrooms of older kids: the smart, popular kids, the athletic kids, the rough and rowdy kids, the class clowns, and the loners.

You know the kind of awkward kid who doesn't quite fit in? the one that the other kids don't dislike, but who is never chosen first (or second, or even third) for any group activities? the one that the other kids pity? Imagine a school teacher walking up to the beautiful, smart, nice, athletic, popular child and whispering "Polly, be a nice girl and go play with poor Suzie, please. She needs a friend to help her with this project." And nice Polly walks up to poor Suzie, puts her arm around her, and says "Suzie, I'll help you work on this project." Poor Suzie just nods, accepting Polly's help without any comment or question.

I realized today that Adelaida is that kid. The other kids in the classroom almost seem to pity her.

Now, I realize that Adelaida just turned three a few months ago, and the classroom is three- to five-year-olds, so she is one of the youngest kids in the class. Also, she is small for her age, so she is by far the smallest kid in the classroom. A lot of the older/bigger kids have younger siblings and they treat Adelaida the same way they treat their younger siblings at home (and the way Adelaida treats her younger siblings): Adelaida is seen as small and fragile, so the other kids are gentle with her, they take care of her, and they do things for her. But she isn't really one of their group.

The Easter egg hunt was outside on the playground. Forty kids lined up along the side of the building, holding their Easter egg bags. (Adelaida is the one in the yellow dress, with the back of her dress tucked into her panties. Poor kid.)
DSC_3637

The teacher said "go find some Easter eggs!" Ten kids took off running onto the playground, twenty-nine kids started walking onto the playground, and Adelaida just stood there, watching everyone ... then eventually followed her classmates.
DSC_3641

The kids filled their sacks with Easter eggs as Adelaida watched them ...
DSC_3644

... and Adelaida climbed up on the playground equipment to play. Notice the flat purple Easter egg bag beneath her? It's empty. No eggs yet. She's just swinging and swinging, and really enjoying herself.

Kids everywhere, with bags full of eggs, and very few eggs left on the ground.
DSC_3652

Adelaida looks in her Easter egg bag and tells me it is empty. She is not unhappy or concerned about the fact that it is empty; this is just a statement: "my Easter egg bag is empty." I ask her if she'd like to find some Easter eggs to put in her bag and she says yes and walks off to find some eggs.
DSC_3653

Deciding that there are no more eggs to find, several of the kids sit down to examine their loot.
DSC_3660

DSC_3665

Alessandra (wearing a white shirt and red pants) walks up to Adelaida and asks her how many eggs she got. Adelaida replies that she didn't get any eggs; her bag is empty. Alessandra very gently takes Adelaida by the hand and they walk away. As they leave, I see Alessandra put her arm around Adelaida, lean down and say, "it's all right. I'll help you find some Easter eggs." Adelaida very compliantly lets Alessandra lead her through the playground looking for eggs, and some of the other kids soon join them, all trying to find an Easter egg for Adelaida.
DSC_3668

Eventually Adelaida, Alessandra, and their followers return. Alessandra walks up to Ms. Aide and tells her "Adelaida didn't get any eggs!" Ms. Aide says that's OK, when they get back to the classroom they are going to share the eggs that they found. Alessandra walks back to Adelaida, reaches into her own bag, pulls out an egg, and places it in Adelaida's Easter egg bag.
DSC_3670

Adelaida pulls the eggs out and shows it to me triumphantly, "Look Momma! I found an Easter egg!"
DSC_3671

She is so excited, she comes running to me -- "Look Momma! A pink egg! I just found it!" "Where did you find it, Adelaida?" "I just found it in my bag from Alessandra! Look, it's pink!"
DSC_3672

I spend a few minutes gushing over Adelaida's pink egg, marveling at her intense joy in finding an Easter egg and silently blessing both Alessandra for being such a good friend to Adelaida and Ms. Aide for creating a kind environment where the kids who find a lot of eggs want to share them with the kids who don't have any eggs.

The Easter egg hunt is over, the kids line up along the building to go back inside, and I go back to work. I spent the rest of the day thinking about my special big girl and her niche in this preschool classroom. She obviously has friends in the class, but seems very content just to play by herself. She was not at all upset when she didn't have any eggs, but overjoyed when she did have one. Her friends in the class coddle her -- I've seen this from several kids other than Alessandra, and Adelaida's teachers have commented on it too -- but Adelaida didn't resist when Alessandra took her hand and led her through the playground. I worry that she wants to play by herself too often, but perhaps that is just a phase she is going through. At this point, she is three years old and doing just fine, so I try not to worry too much!

Three beautiful girls

I look at my daughters every day and am amazed at how blessed I am to have three beautiful, smart, well-behaved, strong, kind, funny girls. Yesterday Estella and Cordelia were sitting up next to each other and Adelaida was giving them toys and hugs and kisses, and all three girls were laughing and laughing! One of those melt-my-heart moments. So I asked Adelaida to sit next to her sisters and got some photos of the three of them together ... dressed alike, too! Thanks to Aunt Laura for the cute dresses :)

Do you know how hard it is to get two babies and a three-year-old to all look at the camera and smile at the same time? We took twenty-five pictures and not a single one with all three kids smiling.

Happy (belated) birthday to Adelaida!

DSC_3526When our kids are all grown up, I want them to look back at their childhoods and remember their birthday celebrations fondly. They have plenty of toys to play with and way more clothes than they need, so birthday gifts are not likely to be remembered long-term. Instead, I want them to do something special for their birthdays that will provide fond memories for years to come.

For Adelaida's previous birthdays, we took her to the children's museum in Indiana and to Explora, Albuquerque's children's museum. This year, she loves to play and is having more fun playing with friends, so we decided to take her to ABQ Playroom, an indoor play area filled with toys: a climbing set with slide, dress-up clothes, video games, puppets, a grocery store with carts, and so much more. Adelaida's birthday was at the end of December, and with the holidays in December and finishing my dissertation manuscript in January, we decided to wait until the beginning of February to have the party -- and then all three girls were sick that week, so we postponed it until the end of March. The party was yesterday, and I guess we were really celebrating Adelaida's 3.26 year birthday!

So yesterday afternoon I picked up the kids at school early and headed over to ABQ Playroom, where Dale met us. We invited three of Adelaida's friends to join us and the adults sat around and talked while the kids enjoyed playing together (or rather near each other, as three-year-olds play "together").

The kids had a blast! I tried to take pictures as much as possible, and here are some of my favorite pictures from the party.

Estella and Cordelia discovered a giant piano mat (or rather, I discovered it and put both girls on the piano). They quickly learned that putting their hands on the mat made music, providing the adults with nice background music while we talked.

Cordelia made it to her belly and rolled into Estella, who immediately grabbed at Cordelia's face. Both girls were still smiling! I love that my girls can crawl all over each other!
