We recently celebrated Estella's and Cordelia's three-quarters-of-a-year birthdays! Our babies are becoming little girls right before our eyes.
(Adelaida, Cordelia, and Estella)
Here is a series of pictures to see how much our little girls have grown in the past nine months.
Estella, one month old
Estella, three months old
Estella, five months old
Estella, seven months old
Estella, nine months old
Cordelia, one month old
Cordelia, three months old
Cordelia, five months old
Cordelia, seven months old
Cordelia, nine months old
Both babies have grown so much -- both physically and developmentally -- in the past month! Estella is determined to move like a big kid. She wants to crawl, to climb up on things, and to reach all of her big sister's toys, despite Adelaida's best efforts to keep them away from her. Estella likes to eat and loves finger-foods, mostly because she can squish them between her fingers and smear them in her hair! Meal time with Estella is always messy. Cordelia can army-crawl now and is as fast as Estella. Both of the girls enjoy crawling over Adelaida and over each other. Cordelia has also discovered babbling this month. She makes the most beautiful little baby babbling sounds! I just love to hear her talk. She enjoys eating finger foods as well, but not nearly as much as Estella likes them. About half of the time Cordelia eats the finger foods and half of the time she very deliberately picks up the food off her tray and drops it on the floor. Meal time with Cordelia is also a very messy event. More than anything else, both Estella and Cordelia love Adelaida. Their big sister can always make them happy and make them laugh, and I rely on Adelaida for help quite often!

How we spent our tax refund
After weeks of procrastination, we finally completed our taxes last weekend and were overjoyed to learn that we would be getting an $850 refund. Woohoo! Like the model Americans we are, we promptly decided to spend the money, to "stimulate the economy." Knowing that our purchase would be a benefit to our fellow Americans made this decision feel very altruistic.
We have been planning a road trip for May, but weren't entirely sure how we would transport two adults, three kids in car seats, and luggage across the country. We have a hatchback Mazda3 that we can't put three car seats in, a three-row Mazda5 that fits three car seats and one stroller, and pretty much nothing else. I can't even get groceries in the Mazda5 if the kids are in the car with me. And we have an old Ford pickup truck that we can put all the car seats in, but not very safely. It is our emergency 4-wheel-drive vehicle, but not ideal for traveling across the country. So, we thought about spending our $850 tax refund on some accessory that would help us take road trips. The thought process, which took place over several days, went something like this:
Maybe we could get a luggage rack for the Mazda5.
Of course, the Mazda5 doesn't have a roof rack, so we'd have to install that first, and the luggage racks don't really hold very much, so we'd have to pack really light.
Instead of a luggage rack, why don't we get a luggage box that goes on the hitch?
That's an interesting idea, but the Mazda5 doesn't have a hitch, so we'd have to get one installed. And we probably couldn't open the back of the car to get the babies in and out with the hitch luggage box installed. And it doesn't hold all that much more than a roof luggage rack, so we still have a luggage capacity problem.
Maybe we need to get both a roof luggage rack and a hitch luggage box.
That might work, but is it really worth spending all that money for those luggage accessories? The truck has lots of luggage space. If only the kids' car seats fit well in the truck we'd be set!
Hmmmm, maybe we should just trade in the truck for a newer truck with more space in the backseat.
Yeah! Let's get a Toyota Tacoma -- I've always wanted one!
(We went to a dealership and looked at Tacomas, tried to fit three car seats in the back seat and failed.)
The Tacoma is a pretty small truck. A full-size truck would be better. So let's get a Tundra instead of a Tacoma. The car seats would fit in the back and there is lots of space for luggage.
Wait, if we're going to spend over ten thousand dollars on a vehicle, we should probably get a vehicle that we're going to drive every day, rather than just a few times a year.
A minivan would fit all the car seats and would solve our luggage problems. And a used minivan costs about the same as a used truck. But minivans have worse gas mileage than the Mazda5, and we'd be spending a lot more in gas if we drove a minivan every day.
Oh look, the Honda Odysseys have Variable Cylinder Management, which turns off two cylinders when the car doesn't need extra power, so it is like a four-cylinder car in terms of gas mileage, with a six-cylinder engine when you really need it. That might be a solution. Let's look on Craigslist to see how much they are selling for . . .
Less than a week later, Dale and I became the proud (at least on my part) owners of a Honda Odyssey!
Of course, a Honda Odyssey costs a little more than our $850 tax refund . . . so here's a picture of what we bought with our tax refund!

A new use for an old toy
Just last week, Dale and I were talking about the baby toys that we might be ready to get rid of, and we considered getting rid of the mega saucer. Now that Estella and Cordelia are mobile, they really enjoy being on the floor and crawling around more than they enjoy the mega saucer. However, they still sit in it sometimes, so we decided to keep it for now. Since then, Estella has found a new use for it -- she crawls through it like it is a tunnel!
I think the first time it happened, she dropped a toy into the base of the mega saucer and naturally went after it, but since then she is intentionally, repeatedly crawling through it just for the fun of it. I guess we won't be getting rid of the mega saucer any time soon!

Sledding with the OK Parkes clan
Our Parkes family Christmas celebration lasted five days, and I think we went sledding every day. The sled run wasn't very steep or very long, but it was enough to keep both the kids and the dads busy for hours every day! Dale packed some snow down along the small hill just outside our front door and we pulled the sleds down from the garage. We had two sled runs, and four sleds, and generally four to seven sledders. And everyone did a great job taking turns!
Before we went outside, we had to get ready.
Sarah is ready for the snow!
Elizabeth is ready for the snow!
And thanks to Laura for bringing an extra snowsuit, Adelaida is ready for the snow too!
Benjamin, Cordelia, and Estella mostly watched from inside, although Benjamin did take a few sled rides with Richard and Laura.
Here are some photos of the sledding fun.
Richard sleds down on his belly
Elizabeth decides to go down the sled run just like her daddy, and she loves it!
Dale tries out a new sled run
Those are Dale's legs :)
So much fun!
Sarah flies down the hill
The four die-hard sledders were Richard, Dale, Elizabeth, and Sarah. They couldn't get enough sledding! Laura, Adelaida, Benjamin, and I all went down several times as well, but didn't spend several hours a day sledding like the other four.
Dale and Elizabeth watch as Richard gives Sarah a push
Despite our best efforts to make Adelaida excited about sledding, she didn't really care for it. The rumor is that she did at least one sled run, sitting on Dale's lap, but unfortunately I missed it. Adelaida spent the time that the others were sledding either inside playing with Benjamin, Estella, and Cordelia, or walking up and down the front steps. She had a great time walking up and down the steps and watching everyone else sled! Here, Sarah and Adelaida are walking down the steps together.
Benjamin is ready to sled with Richard, as Laura is on the next sled run
Wheeeee!
Dale experiments sledding down the hill on the snow shovel. It doesn't go well.
The entire OK Parkes clan: Sarah, Richard, Elizabeth, Laura, and Benjamin
There's nothing quite like a nice cup of hot chocolate after a fun afternoon sledding!

River of Lights with the OK Parkes clan
We didn't go out much while Charlotte, Richard, Laura, and their family were visiting with us over Christmas, but we did have one big outing, to the River of Lights at the Botanic Gardens. The outing started with one vehicle being stuck in the driveway on the way out (we had to dig out the snow around the wheels and push the car out, but luckily didn't have to tow it -- this time) and ended with both vehicles being stuck in the driveway on the way in (we left the cars just off the road and walked in to the house, and towed the cars out the next morning). But between getting the car stuck and getting the cars stuck, we had a great time!
Our first stop was El Pinto, a great Mexican restaurant that is just far enough away that we don't get to eat there very often, then went to the Botanic Gardens for a beautiful walk through the River of Lights. It is hard to photograph light displays in the dark, but we did our best and here are some of the better pictures.
Mamaw and Adelaida sit on a bench and enjoy the view. (The red blanket behind them is a sheet that I draped over the double stroller, keeping the wind out of the babies' faces and letting them get some sleep while we walked through the gardens.)
Almost the whole crew: Benjamin in the stroller, Richard, Sarah standing on the bench, Charlotte, Dale, Adelaida standing on the bench, and Elizabeth standing on the bench. Estella and Cordelia are in the stroller covered by the red sheet behind Adelaida and Elizabeth.
giraffes
zebras
an owl, a lizard, and some cacti
Richard carried Adelaida a large part of the way
Elizabeth and Sarah in front of some penguins on ice
This was our first time at River of Lights, but we definitely plan to go back!

Christmas with the OK Parkes clan
It is a little odd to be writing about a very snowy Christmas while it is sunny and 75 degrees outside, but I have such fond memories of Christmas this year. Writing about it three months later just allows me to reminisce on the great times we had!
With two new babies in the house, we exercised our right to not travel for Christmas this year and instead hosted the Parkes family at our house. Five adults, a five-year-old, two three-year-olds, an eighteen-month-old, and two six-month-olds -- a total of eleven people bunked in our house, and I think we managed it pretty well. We put a blow-up toddler mattress in our room for Adelaida; turned her room over to Mamaw (in the bottom bunk), Elizabeth (in the top bunk), and Sarah (in the toddler bed); Richard, Laura, and Benjamin shared the guest room; and Estella and Cordelia had their room to themselves.
They arrived just after we had a very large snowfall, and Richard got the van stuck on our road before even turning into our driveway. That was the first of at least a dozen stuck vehicles that we extracted in the five days we had visitors. I'm sure we didn't go a single day without getting at least one vehicle stuck, and often two or three!
We had so much fun together! Here are some of the random pictures we took, between chasing kids around the house, sledding, going out, cooking, and trying to keep the house in some semblance of order.
Richard meets his new nieces -- Estella is on the left and Cordelia is on the right.

Happy Benjamin!
Adelaida and Benjamin were playing dogs and cats, crawling all over the house

We had such a great time and can't wait to spend another vacation with the OK Parkes clan!

Adelaida's second chance Easter egg hunt, and a very proud moment
Last night we attended another Easter egg party, this time for my moms group. There were twenty-seven kids there, ranging in age from two months to eleven years old. Rather than send all the kids out to hunt eggs at once, the younger kids (under three) had a five-minute head start before the older kids started collecting eggs. When I told Adelaida that we were going to another Easter egg hunt, she told me that she was going to find an Easter egg and put it in her bag all by herself. I knew that finding one by herself would really boost her confidence, and I wanted her to succeed. So even though Adelaida is already three, I let her go with the younger kids -- she is so calm and slow that I wasn't worried about her racing through the yard and collecting all the eggs before the older kids got to them!
Two wonderful friends in the group offered to hold Estella and Cordelia, so I was free to walk around with Adelaida and take some pictures.
Adelaida walked out to the yard, very carefully holding her Easter egg bag open. She was so intent on holding her bag open that she almost tripped over an Easter egg! I tried to gently encourage her to look down at the ground to find some eggs, but she walked right over that first egg.
Then, she spotted an egg on the ground in front of her, ran to it, and picked it up. Yay! She found an Easter egg, all by herself! She announced that it was pink, "just like the pink egg Alessandra gave me," and put it in her bag.
She continued walking, checked in with her friend Olivia, and they briefly compared egg baskets.
Another egg, and another ...
... and her Easter egg bag was starting to get full!
She found a few more eggs before the bigger kids came out. We counted her eggs and found eight Easter eggs that Adelaida had found all by herself!
After the big kids came out the game changed from "find an egg on the ground" to "walk around and watch the other kids." The Easter egg hunting continued for a while longer, and Adelaida looked on the ground, behind some rocks, under the jungle gym, and next to the fence, eager to find more eggs.
When only a few well-hidden eggs remained, another family drove up to the party. The egg hunt was coming to an end, but six-year-old Sophia ran into the yard and announced that she was going to hunt Easter eggs. Adelaida walked up to her, pulled an egg out of her bag, and handed it to Sophia.
I looked at my daughter and saw a kind, thoughtful, considerate child. I was so proud of Adelaida!
